Board Meeting - February 7, 2008

  1. The meeting was called to order at 11:40 am by President Bill Walters.  After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the board members were introduced.  We also had introductions of members and guests.

  2. In the Treasurer’s Report we have $3730.94 in cash assets.

  3. The New Member presentation was done by Chris Modelski of the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center.  Chris taught us about the facility in the East Mountains.  It has been in existence for 40 years as an environmental education center (mainly for 5th grade APS students).  They are currently trying to expand the use of the land and the facility.  He talked about programs such as their first Saturday Series.  This series is free and open to the public March through September, the first Saturday of the month.  Each month they explore different topics, for ex: birds, mammals etc.  There are many activities such as: Self guided hikes, Geocaching, Eco-Casa and much more.  For a fee your group can check into more extensive classes.  To find out more information please see their website www.nmnaturalhistory.org.

  4. Current member presentation was done by Betty Miller of the Read “Write Adult literacy program, based in Moriarity, NM.  Betty spoke about the program having started in 2000.

  5. In is a tutoring program for anyone who needs help.  It is available for no cost.  They offer all kinds of training such as: English, math, reading, citizenship training and much more.  Betty brought a student to come tell us of the program,  Fabiola Melendez.  She told us her story of coming to the Sates with a sick child and needing to learn English.  She used the program and now is an employee of the program.    The Literacy Program is in desperate for tutors.  There are about 20 people currently on a waiting list waiting tutors.  They offer a one to one tutor ratio and have flexible hours of operation.   They will be holding a fundraiser March 15th for more information please visit the website at www.readwritenm.org.

  6. The guest speakers were from Albuquerque 311 system.   They were Holly Steinburg and Lisa Martin.   They taught us about the city’s 311 system and what type of information it provides.    They can tell you all non-emergency City inquiries and services.  Ex:  What time is the zoo open?  Where is the court house?  It is a holiday do I have trash pickup?  They are open 24/7, 365 days a year.  In some cases they can bridge the gap between customer calling and services needed, for ex:  my trash can got stolen can I order a new one?  And they can send the request to solid waste and help you get a new trash can.   They explained the differences between 911, 411, 311, and services like 242-cops.  311 has taken a huge burden off the 911 system.  To find out more call 311 or (505)-768-2000.

  7. Bill mentioned Bay Stevens and the Enterprise Training will be back in 2008, watch for more details.

  8. There will be a meeting Monday the 11th of February to discuss and multi-chamber golf tournament, in the East Mountains.
