Luncheon Meeting
April 4, 2013
Board Members Present: Bob Brittain, Wayne Clay, Kara Schug, Bill Herman, Regina Marnett, Jose Madera, Barbara Ormand and Julie Albright, Director.
Meting called to order by President Bob Brittain at 11:50 am Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Bernalillo County Commissioner Wayne Johnson gave a brief talk about the minimum wage legislation increase being considered in the county. He considers this increase to be harmful to small businesses and their owners. He circulated petitions to those present for signatures as business owners to oppose this petition. Signed petitions should be returned to his assistant, Karen Brown, either by fax 462-9821, or email, or mail. Contact his office 468-7212 for further questions.
Next was the introduction of Board Members and introduction of Chamber members and guests.
New member presentation was by Rachel Donovan, Mortgage Loan Consultant of Legacy Mortgage in Cedar Crest. Legacy is an independent mortgage company and does all types of loans in the Albuquerque area. Legacy has been a top lender in Albuquerque the last four years.
This meeting was an “open” meeting to discuss Chamber member involvement and Chamber events to help promote businesses in the East Mountain area. Two events being considered are a Spring Scavenger Hunt in the spring and a Hot Chocolate Trail in the fall or winter. These events would help drive people to businesses especially located up and down Hwy 14 and promote the chamber’s benefits to local businesses. Non-members would be charged to participate and urged to join the chamber.
Paula Massey a 6th grade teacher at Roosevelt Middle School won the Teacher Star Award recently. To nominate someone for this prestigious award, contact Julie for the nomination form. To become a sponsor is $50 – this money is given to the Star Teacher usually as a gift card.
President Bob Brittain spoke about getting more chamber members involved in chamber activities to promote membership growth. We need “ambassadors” – members who would be involved in greeting new members, attending ribbon cuttings, etc. A sign up sheet was passed to those present for ambassador involvement.
Also there was a discussion on holding more networking events, probably in the evening to promote business networking. The first network event will be held at the Remax Pros office in Cedar Crest on June 6th.
We also need more help in staffing the Chamber Office each Wednesday from 10 am-4 pm. A sign up sheet for volunteers was circulated.
Suzy Clay spoke about the need for a chairman and volunteers for the Breakfast with Santa, the chamber’s major fund raising event to be held December 7th. Suzy has put together a manual to help the new chairman with organizing the event. There was also a suggestion that businesses donate cash to help pay for the tickets.
Treasurer Bill Herman gave the Treasurer’s report. March income was $2820 with expenses of $1174.17. Year to date net income is $3066.29 with $1200 of that a donation from Commissioner Wayne Johnson’s office to assist with rent for the rest of the year.
Member of the month is the Tijeras Senior Center and Liz Morantis won a $25 gift certificate donated by Rachel Donovan of Legacy Mortgage.
May luncheon and tour of the GCC Plant in Tijeras. No luncheon meeting on July 4.
Meeting was adjourned at 12:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted by Barbara Ormand, Secretary
